What is DAO?

DAO (diamine oxidase) is an enzyme normally produced in the tissues of a healthy human intestine. It is the main enzyme responsible for metabolizing histamine from food that enters the body.

In other words, DAO absorbs and breaks down the histamine that enters the body, preventing it from entering the bloodstream.

How to suspect DAO Deficiency

and Histamine Intolerance?

The most common symptoms caused by DAO deficiency are:

Digestive disorders, including bloating, pain, constipation and diarrhea, nausea, vomiting

  • Dry skin, redness, rashes, swelling

  • Nasal congestion, sneezing, difficulty breathing

  • Tinnitus, dizziness

  • Headaches, migraines

  • Anxiety, fatigue, panic attacks

  • Muscle pain and cramps

  • Arrhythmia or rapid heartbeat

  • Painful menstruation, infertility

  • Insomnia

In addition to the histamine naturally produced in the body, many foods naturally contain it, stimulate its production, or block the DAO enzyme responsible for breaking it down.

If you suspect you have histamine intolerance, it is important to limit your intake of certain foods until the underlying cause of the reaction is determined.

Diagnostics: How can histamine
intolerance be confirmed?

1. Diagnostic Therapy (4–8 weeks)

If you cannot undergo diagnostic procedures, try eliminating high-histamine foods from your diet for 30 days, then reintroduce them one by one while observing your body's reaction. Additionally, consider following a low-histamine diet and taking DAO Prim with each meal. If symptoms improve, it is possible you have reduced DAO activity.

2. Blood Test for Histamine Levels and DAO Enzyme Activity

A high histamine level compared to DAO indicates excessive histamine intake in the body and insufficient DAO to effectively break it down.

3. Diamine Oxidase Enzyme Activity Test - Histamine 50

A reliable diagnostic method is a skin test using a 0.1% histamine solution. The appearance and persistence of a papule larger than 3 mm at the test site for 50 minutes, along with typical symptoms, confirm the diagnosis of histamine intolerance and serve as the basis for starting enzyme replacement therapy with diamine oxidase (DAO).

Enzyme Replacement Therapy
for DAO Deficiency

Enzyme replacement therapy involves taking supplements that contain the enzyme diamine oxidase, which helps restore normal DAO levels in the digestive system and reduce symptoms caused by excess histamine.

DAO Prim is specifically designed for individuals with diamine oxidase deficiency. The enzyme in DAO Prim, derived from plant sources, is fully compatible with the human enzyme.

Taking one or two capsules of DAO Prim before meals increases DAO levels in the gastrointestinal tract, enhancing the body's ability to break down histamine.

DAO Prim:

  • Ensures effective histamine breakdown.

  • Encreases diamine oxidase levels in the digestive system.
